Guide to ICF Continuing Coach Education (CCEs)
What are CCEs?
CCEs, or Continuing Coach Education units, are credits earned by coaches through various learning modalities aimed at exposing them to new content and enhancing their overall knowledge base and coaching skills. These opportunities provide coaches with a diverse range of options to support and grow their competence in different areas.
Why are CCEs important?
CCEs are crucial in the context of the coaching profession as they signify a commitment to continuous professional development. In a self-regulating industry like coaching, the International Coach Federation (ICF) requires credentialed coaches to continually improve their skills and knowledge. This ongoing education ensures that coaches deliver the highest value to their clients by staying abreast of the latest industry trends, methodologies, and best practices.
When/how do coaches need CCES and how many do they need?
Coaches are required to accrue Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units to fulfill the renewal criteria for their ICF credentials, which have a validity period of three years. The renewal process is obligatory and serves as a fundamental requirement to sustain ICF credentials. Regardless of the credential level—ACC, PCC, or MCC—coaches must accumulate a total of 40 CCE units during each renewal cycle.
● ACC Credential: Coaches holding an ACC credential need to earn 40 CCEs, with specific allocations, including 24 in Core Competencies (of which 3 are in Ethics and 10 through receiving Mentor Coaching), and the remaining 16 may be in Core or Resource Development.
● PCC Credential: Similarly, coaches with a PCC credential must acquire 40 CCEs, with 24 in Core Competencies (including 3 in Ethics), and the remaining 16 may be in Core or Resource Development.
● MCC Credential: Coaches with an MCC credential have the same requirement of 40 CCEs, with 24 in Core Competencies (including 3 in Ethics), and the remaining 16 may be in Core or Resource Development.
This structured approach to CCE requirements ensures that coaches continue to evolve, adapt, and deliver high-quality coaching services throughout their careers. The ongoing pursuit of knowledge and skill development is integral to maintaining ICF credentials and upholding the standards of the coaching profession.
What are the three types of CCEs?
Core Competencies: These CCEs focus on enhancing a coach's core coaching skills and competencies. They contribute to the development and refinement of fundamental coaching capabilities.
Resource Development: CCEs in Resource Development involve learning experiences that broaden a coach's knowledge beyond the core competencies. This category encompasses a diverse range of topics related to coaching and professional development.
Ethics: CCEs dedicated to Ethics specifically address ethical considerations and practices in coaching. These credits contribute to the coach's understanding and application of ethical principles within the coaching profession.
